Transparency Assessment on Level 2 Automated Vehicle HMIs

The responsibility and role of human drivers during automated driving might change dynamically. In such cases, human-machine interface (HMI) transparency becomes crucial to facilitate safety, as the states vehicle have be communicated correctly efficiently. However, there is no standardized assessment method evaluate understanding toward HMI. this study, we defined functional (FT) and, based on definition, proposed a preliminary step objective measurement for HMI understanding. was verified in an online survey where HMIs different manufacturers were adopted their transparencies assessed. Even though significant result found among designs, FT significantly higher participants more experienced with SAE Level 2 vehicles, suggesting that users understand better. Further identification tests revealed icons BMW’s VW’s designs used state longitudinal lateral control. This study provides novel assessing minimizing confusion driving, which could greatly assist design process future.
